Hi Fashion lovers,
A simple sewing task that so many of us don’t know how to do or do but not correctly. So I thought I would do a little post on how to sew a button!!!
I have attached a free Instruction sheet that you can download and also a video outlining the steps for you all to follow along with.
What you will need is:
Needle – Any basic sewing needle will do the thinner the better
Thread- Same colour as the garment you are sewing the button onto if possible
Button- The one that has fallen off or a spare or one that matches in the rest. NOTE- some buttons have 2 holes and some have 4 the one I’m using has 4 but you can adapt this method for the 2 swell.
Cutting tools- scissor, knife or something sharp to cut the threads.
Steps:
How to sew a Button Instructions – PDF downloadable sheet

1. Thread your needle
with 60cm of thread pulling it half way through so you have 2 equal lengths of 30cm on each side and then tie a knot at the bottom and cut.

2. Position the button
in place.
Starting on the back side of the fabric, pass the needle up through the fabric and up through one the button holes.

3. Move the needle into the opposite button hole and return the needle back through the hole to the back of the fabric.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for another four times to make sure the button is nice and secure. On the fourth time stop when you have the thread pulled through to the right side of the fabric.

5. Move the needle to the opposite hole but don’t get all the way through the other under side just go through the hole but not the fabric. Secure the bass of the button by wrapping the thread around the button 3

6. Pass the needle through to the back side of the fabric, pull tight and tie off with a simple hand knot.
